What Causes Wearing Off?
The development of wearing off is thought to result from the combination of Parkinson’s disease (PD) progression and the rapid break down of levodopa in the body, resulting in a feeling that the effects of levodopa are fading out or wearing off. Symptoms of wearing off may be addressed by using a levodopa preparation containing drugs that extend the presence of levodopa in the body, or adding additional therapies to the treatment regimen (Figure 4).
